When you configure a Mobile Experience Management (MEM) policy, you can choose how your enrolled devices will perform operating system and app updates (i.e. only perform updates over a specific maintenance window).
Automatic application and system updates will only occur when all of the following requirements are satisfied:
-
The device is connected to the internet
-
The device is charging
-
The device is not being actively used
-
The application to update is not running in the foreground
To configure app and OS updates in your MEM policy, use the following workflow:
-
Select the Settings icon ( ) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
Before you configure app and OS updates, Enroll Your Organization.
-
In MEM, select Policy.
-
On the General tab, configure your System Updates preference.
Choose from one of the following options:
-
Automatic: Perform updates as soon as they are available.
-
Device default: Perform updates in accordance to default behavior of device. This option usually requires the device user to trigger software updates.
-
Windowed: Perform both application and system updates during a specified maintenance window. The update window also automatically applies to Play Store app updates and works in conjunction with application update constraints.
Because the Samsara Agent and Samsara Launcher always run in the foreground, it is recommended to set a maintenance window if you would like to automatically update these applications.
Note
If an app’s Google Play Store Updates type is set to high priority, the update will apply immediately and will override the maintenance window.
-
Postpone: System updates will automatically install 30 days after the update was released.
Note
On Android devices, downloading system updates is a different process from installing system updates. The setting determines when system updates are applied/installed on the device but not when they are downloaded. A system update download is typically manufacturer-dependent but users can manually turn off automatic OS update downloads (Settings > Software update > Auto download over Wi-Fi).

Configure Location Detection preferences:

There may be applicable laws and regulations triggered by the default location settings. Review these laws and make sure you provide notice to and collect consent from your employees, if necessary.
By default location detection is enabled. To customize your preference, select from one of the following options:
-
Device default: Defer to the device preferences for location detection
-
Enabled: (Default) Enable location detection on all devices assigned to this policy regardless of the device preferences. The location of the device is updated periodically while the device is connected to the internet.
-
Disabled: Disable location detection on all devices assigned to this policy regardless of device preferences.
-
-
In the top right, Publish to <X> devices. Samsara will deliver the policy update to any associated devices as soon as they connect to the internet.
