From the Samsara dashboard, you can create DVIR templates with custom defects and assign them to individual vehicles or trailers.
These defect lists will then display in the Samsara Driver App for the vehicle or trailer to which they are associated.
Note
To use DVIR (or Walkaround Inspection in the UK) templates, your drivers must use the following version of the Samsara Driver App:
-
US: Samsara Driver App Version u50 or later
-
EU: Samsara Driver App Version u52 or later.
A defect is any maintenance component that is outside acceptable standards. To streamline the DVIR process, you can create custom DVIR templates specific to the vehicle type and choose the defects you want drivers to assess during their inspection. When you customize the DVIR template, you can choose from the following list of defects:
Defect Type |
Defect |
---|---|
Exterior - Front |
|
Exterior - Rear |
|
Exterior - Side and underneath |
|
Interior - Driver cabin |
|
Interior - Passenger area |

To help your fleet administrators manage DVIRs, you can customize your DVIR templates that drivers and other inspectors fill out when they assess the condition of the vehicle. You can select the defects you want your team to assess from Samsara’s list of common defects, or you can create custom defects. For pre-populated defects, the Samsara Driver App automatically displays the defect in the associated defect location of the DVIR. For custom defects, you must choose the location in the DVIR where you want the defect to display.
To create a DVIR template, perform the detailed steps below or watch the video:
-
From Maintenance, select Templates > + Create Template.
-
Begin an Empty Template from scratch or Start from an Existing Template that has defects pre-populated.
-
Click to name DVIR template and provide a descriptive template name.
-
To select an existing defect, select Defect Name from the drop down. The Defect Location automatically populates based on the defect type. When finished, click + Add defect.
-
To create a new custom defect, enter the Defect Name and select the Defect Location from the drop-down. When finished, click + Add defect. The new defect is automatically selected.
-
Select additional defects applicable to the vehicle or trailer to complete your template.
-
Select Save when done.
After you create a template, you can apply the template to one or more vehicles in your existing fleet to automate the DVIR process. You can filter your fleet by searching for specific assets or vehicle types and apply the template to all relevant vehicles.
To assign a template:
-
From Maintenance, select Templates > Assignments.
-
Select the assets to which you want to assign the template. To create a filter based on the asset name, enter the asset in the Search Assets field. To sort by pre-existing features, select a Vehicle type or sort by preexisting tags from the Tags menu. You can also view assets with previously assigned templates by selecting from the Template drop-down. The search displays only the filtered assets that match your criteria.
-
Select the asset, click Assign Template, and then select the assigned template.
-
Click Save.
The defects section in the DVIR reflects the DVIR Template associated with that vehicle or trailer.
