Note
Walkaround is the UK version of the Daily Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) mandated in the US.
Per the UK Department for Transport, all drivers must ensure that a vehicle is safe to drive before embarking on a journey and at least once every 24 hours. Walkaround inspections are mandatory for PCVs/PSVs, HGVs and passenger-carrying vans.
Drivers are expected to perform a walkaround check of a vehicle before a journey and verify specific items for any defects. The list of items varies depending on the type of vehicle:
If a defect is found, Commercial drivers shall also report them in writing to maintenance. This report includes:
Date of inspection
Details of the defects
Name of the person reporting the defects vehicle registration or identification mark
Although this report is required for HGVs, PCVs/PSVs, and passenger-carrying vans, companies at their own discretion may also enforce walkaround checks for other vehicles than those listed above.
Drivers can submit a workaround inspection from the Samsara Driver App:
After a driver has logged into the Samsara Driver App and selected a vehicle, Walkaround is accessible on the landing page from the green tile.
To begin, the driver selects Walkaround and clicks Create Walkaround.
The app displays the following fields:
Vehicle: Prepopulated with vehicle name selected when at log-in
VIN: (Optional) Prepopulated if available
Location: (Optional) Current location
License plate: Prepopulated if available
Odometer: Prepopulated if available
The driver can take photos from all 4 sides of the vehicle: front, back, and both sides. By default this is optional, but it can be made required in Settings > Maintenance.
If there are any defects from the previous walkaround for that vehicle, they are listed below for the driver to resolve.
After all the required fields are added, the driver can continue to the following task and perform a daily inspection.
The list of items to verify is defined by the template assigned to that vehicle; read more about templates here. Items will be grouped in sections depending on where they are situated with respect to the vehicle. At the top of the list, the driver can search for an item.
To complete the verification, the driver must tick off every item. If any item is identified as defective, the driver can append a photo and a comment. They can track how many items they have checked in every section as well as how many defects are present in that section.
Finally, the driver identifies the vehicle as either Safe or Unsafe and certifies the submission.
After submitted by a driver, the walkaround report will then appear on the Samsara Driver App as well as the dashboard under Maintenance > Walkaround.
You can grant mechanics or agents limited access to the Samsara dashboard to access the reports and address any defective items. Read more about the different access roles here.
Select each Walkaround to view the detailed report. Mechanics can select individual defects they choose to resolve. If the vehicle was marked as unsafe to drive, they have the option of providing additional commentary after the Walkaround is resolved.
After the inspection is resolved, the mechanic’s name and the date/time will appear at the bottom of the report in both the dashboard and Samsara Driver App.
