If your drivers have a Samsara CM-series Dash Cam installed in their vehicle, any safety event that the camera detects will automatically upload a video of the safety event to your Safety Inbox. After you review the video from the Safety Inbox (Safety ( ) > Safety Inbox), you can automatically assign or manually assign a coach and a coaching status to the event to indicate the followup action.
By default, a coach has 14 days to conduct a coaching session with a driver. To modify the coaching settings, see Customizable Coaching Settings.
Before you can assign a coach, ensure that the coach has a Full Admin role, is an admin with tag permissions, or a custom role with Coach Safety Events permissions. To create a user with coaching permissions, you must have a Full Admin role or a custom role with permissions to view Safety Inbox & Report.
To automate the assignment of a coach to a driver for a detected safety event, you must first create the association using the following workflow. You can also update coach assignments in bulk using a comma-separated values (CSV) file.
-
Select the Settings icon ( ) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
From within Fleet settings, select Safety > Coaching.
-
In Coach Assignment, select Edit Assignments.
-
Select all drivers to which you want to assign a coach. If you have assigned a tag to a driver, you can also filter by tag.
-
Select Edit Assigned Coach and select the coach to which you want to assign to the selected drivers.
-
Click Assign to confirm the coach assignments.
All subsequent safety events are automatically assigned to the coach responsible for that driver.
For large fleets, managing multiple coach assignments manually can be cumbersome. As an alternative to manual configuration, you can make coach assignments in a single instance using a comma-separated values (CSV) file.
Before you can make coach assignments in bulk, ensure that:
-
You are an organizational administrator.
-
The coach has a Full Admin role role, is an admin with tag permissions, or has a custom role with coaching permissions.
The easiest way to create coach assignments in bulk is to first download the coach assignment list from the Samsara dashboard. Samsara provides the coach assignments list in a CSV format and includes all editable fields. Consider the following notes before making changes to the coach assignments list:
-
The file must be properly formatted CSV file.
-
The first row of the CSV file is the header row, and you must include it in the file.
-
The header row must contain all fields from the CSV table.
-
Delete rows containing drivers to which you don't want to assign coaches. During a bulk uploads, coach assignments can be added or updated, but not deleted. Therefore, including a driver without a coach name will not update an assignment.
To bulk assign coaches to drivers:
-
Select the Settings icon ( ) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
From within Fleet settings, select Safety > Coaching.
-
In Coach Assignment, select Edit Assignments.
-
Select More Actions > Upload CSV.
-
Select Coach assignment List to download your existing coach assignment data.
Note
You can only use this template containing the list of your coach assignments and the fields that are configurable. Any other format will display an error.
-
Update the information in the CSV file and save the changes (see CSV Format for Coach Assignments for detailed formatting requirements).
-
After you edit your file, select Upload a file.
-
Choose the CSV file from your computer, or drag and drop the CSV file to the window.
-
Click Preview to review the coach assignments that will be added or edited.
-
Click Confirm to save the changes.
The following table describes the CSV fields you can use to define your coach assignments. When there is no data specified for a given field, the value will be n/a
. This can mean either this data has never been entered by the user or is not being collected by Samsara.

You can manually assign a coach to a driver behavior as a one-time occurrence or apply the assignment to all future behaviors for that driver. To apply the assignment for future behaviors, triage the safety event from the Driver Coaching Workflow. To manually assign the coach to a driver as a one-time occurrence, use the following workflow:
-
Locate and then select the safety event from the Safety Inbox.
To narrow the scope of the results, select an Event Type, event Status, or Assigned Coach (Unassigned or search for a coach name).
-
Above the safety event preview, select Coach to view available coaches.
-
Search for or select the coach that you want to assign to the event.
Samsara automatically generates an email to notify the coach of the assignment. No email is generated if you assign yourself as the coach.
