There are two common methods for drivers to recapture time while driving under hours of service rules.
-
Cycle reset: (Optional, but most common) A driver takes a reset period (34 hours for Federal) that resets the 8 day, 70-hour period.
-
Running Recap: When a day ends at midnight, the hours worked 8 days ago drop off. The hours are then recaptured and added to any available 70-hour on-duty cycle hours for use the following day. This enables drivers to run continuously without the need to take a 34-hour reset. This may be a preferred method of operation for some carriers.
Use the Recap Hours Report to view the number of hours that your drivers are eligible to gain over the next 7 days. This report is available as a tab on the Hours of Services Report. If you are a fleet administrator who dispatches drivers who follow Hours of Service rules, this report can help you schedule drivers who want to leverage their recap hours.
The report displays the following information for drivers in your fleet:
Field |
Description |
---|---|
Driver |
Name of the driver. You can further drill down into the full Hours of Service details for a specific driver by selecting the driver name. |
Duty Status |
Driving status (Driving, On Duty, Yard Move, Off Duty, Personal Conveyance, Sleeper Berth, or Disconnected Waiting Time). |
Cycle Today |
The cycle time the driver has remaining today. For example 10:32. |
Cycle Tomorrow |
The cycle the driver has available starting at midnight (or noon for noon to noon driver). For example 22:55 (+12:23 from Sunday, Oct 18 Dropping off cycle at Midnight). |
Subsequent dates... |
The hours gained back the following days. For example +9:18 for the next day that drops off the cycle - Monday, Oct 19. In some cases, you may want to know information beyond the one day. You can view the previous subsequent days to determine how many hours the drivers will regain at midnight for the next couple of days. So, tomorrow at midnight, the driver will gain back +9:18. The day after that, the driver will gain back 10:25:59. |
To focus on a specific set of drivers, you can narrow the results using Tags to display only drivers that belong to specific tag groups, current Duty Status, Active Drivers status, or Vehicle Assignment status. You can also use the Search to find drivers by name.
Drivers can anticipate the number of hours that can be captured the next day by viewing the log in the Samsara Driver App.
When drivers view their cycle, they can see the hours to be gained and recaptured at midnight.
For example if you had 7:57 remaining in the cycle, and 17:44 in tomorrow's cycle, the driver would gain 9:47.
The hours are also reflected in the Driver HOS Log. For example, at midnight (August 16), the remaining hours from August 10 drops off the log and that time is added back to the cycle remaining: 1:10 + 4:13 = 5:23
The information also exists in the DOT Inspection Page and ELD Data file.
