Each region for which you must track drivers to maintain compliance has rulesets that are specific to the region.
As a fleet administrator, you have the ability to update the ruleset to which your drivers are subject at both an organizational and per-driver level. You can manage rulesets from Settings ( ) > Compliance.
By default, your organization will automatically be configured to the USA (8/70 Property) ruleset with a 34-Hour Restart. You can adjust these settings to reflect the ruleset under which your organization operates.
The best approach when adjusting these ruleset settings is to mimic the ruleset that your organization operated under prior to the ELD mandate. If you have any specific questions about the ruleset to which your organization is subject, please contact your local DOT Office.
Field |
Description |
---|---|
Name |
Name of the custom driver ruleset. |
Cycle |
Select the appropriate cycle regulation to which your drivers must adhere. |
Restart |
Select the restart time period: 34, 24, or none for US; 36 or 72 for Canada. |
30-min Rest Break Required |
Default is None, meaning no 30-minute rest break is required for your drivers. If a rest break is required, choose the appropriate rule for your drivers: Select California Mealbreak for drivers that must take a meal break after five hours of drive time, Property (off-duty/sleeper) if your drivers are transporting property that is not hazardous materials, or Explosives/HazMat (on duty) if your drivers are transporting hazardous materials. When a rest break is required, the Samsara Driver App counts down to the break time, logs any violations, and resets the clock after the break time is over. |
The State Override ruleset feature can be useful in the case that your organization has operations where some drivers leave the state and some stay within. This feature allows you to set two different rulesets, which are automatically applied based on the GPS location of your Vehicle Gateway. When you create or change an override ruleset, the changes apply retroactively on HOS logs with the exception of the Canada Cycle 1 and 2 rulesets.
The state override will only apply when the driver selects a vehicle that is in the applicable state. If a driver leaves the state, the driver will be moved to the default ruleset for that cycle. When the driver leaves the state, they will be moved to the group default. When the driver returns to the state, they will be on the group default ruleset for the next 7 or 8 days. However, if the driver returns to the state and takes a 34 hour reset, they will be moved to the state ruleset when they start their new cycle. When the driver returns to the home state and completes the 34-hr designated reset period in that state, they will be moved to the state ruleset.
You can create a state override driver ruleset in Settings > Compliance > State Override Driver Ruleset or on a per-driver basis in the driver profile. When you create a state override driver ruleset, you must specify the following information:
Field |
Description |
---|---|
Name |
Descriptive name for the state override ruleset. |
Cycle |
Cycle to apply to the driver when entering the state. |
Restart |
Select the restart time period: 34, 24, or none for US; 36 or 72 for Canada. |
30-min Rest Break Required |
Enforce a break time for drivers with special status. |
US State |
State in which the override applies. |
If your fleet is located in or travels through Canada, you can configure Canadian HOS rules for drivers. Canadian rulesets will only apply when a driver selects a vehicle that is in Canada.
Rulesets are divided into regions:
-
Canada South (below latitude 60°N): British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, majority of Quebec, New Brunswick, parts of Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.
-
Canada North (above latitude 60°N): Yukon, NW Territories, Nunavut, parts of Quebec, and parts of Newfoundland).
By default, your Canadian Hours of Service ruleset is designated as Canada South Cycle 1.
You can adjust the settings for each region independently depending on the ruleset under which your organization operates.
For each ruleset, you can configure the following information:
