Automatically Update Driver Status (Auto-Duty)

Samsara automatically transitions the driver status according to the conditions of your regional mandates. If your drivers are subject to regional mandates such as ELD, you should always keep this enabled for your organization to avoid going out of compliance.

Status	Conditions
DRIVE	A vehicle is considered driving when a vehicle exceeds 5mph (the value defined by the ELD Mandate). The Samsara Driver App automatically transitions drivers to Drive unless they are in Personal Conveyance or Yard Move.
YARD MOVE → ON DUTY	After a driver manually selects Yard Move, the Yard Move status will remain indefinitely unless: There is an engine restart. When an engine restart occurs, the Samsara Driver App prompts drivers to confirm if they would like to remain in Yard Move. If they do not confirm before the timer on the app runs out, they are placed in On Duty. If the vehicle begins moving or already is moving they will be transitioned to Drive. (Canada only) The driver exceeds a maximum speed of 32km/hr as per the Canada ELD mandate. If the driver exceeds the speed threshold, the status automatically changes to Driving and the Samsara Driver App alerts the driver about the status change. (United States only) The driver exceeds a maximum speed of 20mph. This setting is optional for drivers in the United States. If the driver exceeds the speed threshold, the status automatically changes to Driving and the Samsara Driver App alerts the driver about the status change.
PERSONAL CONVEYANCE → OFF DUTY	After a driver manually selects Personal Conveyance (PC), the PC status will remain indefinitely unless: There is an engine restart. When an engine restart occurs drivers will be prompted to confirm if they would like to remain in PC. If they do not confirm this before the timer on the modal runs out, they will be placed into Off Duty. If the vehicle begins moving, or already is moving they will be transitioned to Drive. (Canada only) The driver exceeds the maximum allotted distance of 75km as per the Canada ELD mandate. The Samsara Driver App automatically transitions the driver from PC to Drive after exceeding the maximum distance and notifies the driver about the status transition.
DRIVE → ON DUTY	After the vehicle comes to a stop for five consecutive minutes, the Samsara Driver App displays a prompt for the driver to choose whether they want to remain in Drive or transition to On Duty. (Canada only) If the driver responds before the one minute timeout expires, the driver is transitioned to On Duty at the time they respond to the prompt. If the driver does not respond before the one minute timeout expires, the driver will be automatically transitioned to On Duty when the prompt is automatically dismissed, which is six minutes after the vehicle comes to a stop. (United States only) If the driver does not respond to this prompt before the one minute timeout expires, the driver is transitioned to On Duty retroactive to the time the vehicle stopped moving.
