Samsara Cloud administrators can log into Samsara as another user (impersonate a user) to help troubleshoot problems or check user access levels.
This feature is available to all users who are assigned roles as Full Admin or who are assigned a custom roles with the permission to Log in as Other Users under the Advanced section of custom roles. For more information on creating a custom role, see Custom Roles for Sites Administrators.
For security, these measures apply when administrators and support users log in as another user:
-
The act of logging in and logging out as another user is tracked in the Activity Log.
-
All actions taken while the user is logged in as another user are tracked as being performed by that user.
-
All sessions logged in as another user are set to expire after 4 hours.
-
A user can only log in as a user if they have access to do so over all domains. For example, if a user only has access to log in as another user for a single Asset (under Access level when adding a User), they will not be able to log in as any users who belong to other Assets.
Similarly, you only have access to log in as another in your organization; you cannot log in as any user who belongs to any other organizations.
To impersonate a user:
-
Select the Settings icon ( ) at the bottom of your Sites menu to view dashboard settings.
-
Select Users & Roles.
-
Ensure you are a Full Admin or have user access to log in as another user.
If you do not have permission to log in as other users, contact the administrator for your account to update your role.
-
To impersonate a user, select the more actions menu in the row for the user you want to impersonate and then select Log in as user.
You will now see a purple banner at the top of the Samsara dashboard that indicates who you are logged in as.
-
Navigate to any Samsara page and you will see what they’d see when logged in.
-
Toggle as needed between Read Only and Writes Enabled.
Warning
-
With Read Only mode, you are blocked from performing write actions.
-
With Writes Enabled, you can perform write actions under the user account. Take care as any actions you take on behalf of the user can't be undone.
