A driver is permitted to operate on paper logs when using a rental vehicle without an ELD for up to eight days (for more information, see the TRALA exemption). For drivers utilizing a rental vehicle for nine or more days, an ELD must be used.

Install a Samsara Vehicle Gateway as the acting ELD or you can use an ELD supplied by the rental company. It is recommended that the motor carrier and rental company agree to best approach. The rental company will likely have prior experience.

Acquire and allocate spare VGs in your dispatch office for potential rental truck application.

For easy identification, label your VG both with a physical label and in the Samsara dashboard using the phrase
rental vehiclein the name. This will assist staff and officers in understanding rental truck usage.
