To get started with the Samsara ID Card Reader, you need a Vehicle Gateway (model VG34 or later), a Samsara ID Card Reader, and a unique Samsara or compatible third-party ID Card for each user.
Note
If you must add a punch hole to your Samsara ID Card, punch the hole on the barcode side to avoid punching the antenna on the card's interior. If you punch a hole in the antenna, the card will be unreadable by the ID Card Reader.
To install a Samsara ID Card Reader:

Use the provided mounting hardware and cable management clips to mount the Samsara ID Card Reader in a location that is convenient for your drivers or passengers depending on the intended use case.

Plug the Samsara ID Card Reader into the USB port of your VG.
If the USB port is already occupied by a dash cam, contact Samsara Support for a USB splitter.

Verify that the Samsara ID Card Reader is receiving power from the VG.
The card reader will beep once to indicate that it is receiving power.

Verify the status of the Samsara ID Card Reader.
When the gateway is on and active, the light on the ID Card Reader will remain a solid orange.
