On Nov 21, all customers that have already opted into the Canada Early Access features will receive the below 3 updates. All customers opting into the Canada Early Access feature bundles after Nov 21 will automatically receive the updates as part of the bundle. Please refer to this product guide on how to turn on Canada Early Access feature bundles and other ELD features in the bundle.
Canada roadside inspection transfers
When drivers are pulled over for a roadside inspection in Canada they are required to present their past 14 days of logs to the inspecting officer. This will typically be done by electronically transferring their logs to the Canadian government via an encrypted email.
How to transfer logs electronically via an encrypted email in the Driver App:
Drivers will be presented with 2 options on the roadside inspections page:

E-mail to Canadian Government

Driver should choose this option during roadside inspections. This will trigger an encrypted email to the enforcement officer.

E-mail to Myself

This will trigger an email to be sent to custom email address.

After selecting an option there will be an option to enter a commented given by the inspector before hitting send. This comment is what will appear on the emails.
Once the transfer is initiated it cannot be recalled. The transfer process usually takes less than 5 minutes to complete.
Automatic DRIVE > ON DUTY transition timing
When a vehicle is within the Canadian border, automatic DRIVE > ON DUTY transition timing will behave differently from the US according to the Canadian regulations.
(For cross-border fleets: When the vehicle is in the US, drivers are placed On Duty retroactive to the time the vehicle stopped moving.)
How automatic DRIVE > ON DUTY works in Canada:
After the vehicle comes to a stop for 5 consecutive minutes, the driver will be shown a prompt asking them if they would like to remain in Drive or go On Duty.

If they respond to the prompt before the 1 minute time expires, they will be placed ON DUTY when they respond (i.e., the start time of the ON DUTY segment will be when the driver manually update the status)

If they do not respond to this prompt before the 1 minute time expires, they will be placed ON DUTY when the prompt is dismissed (i.e., the start time of the ON DUTY segment will be 6 minutes after the vehicle stops)
Unassigned on-duty segments
Canada ELD mandate expect ELD systems to automatically generate unassigned driving and on-duty segments if no driver is logged into the ELD.
How to manage on-duty unassigned segments on the admin dashboard
Admins will see both the trip time and idle time if an unassigned on-duty segment has been generated following an unassigned driving segment. Admins must assign / annotate both segments at the same time. Admins may edit the drivers' logs afterwards if needed.
Samsara will record an unassigned on-duty segment if the engine is detected idling for >5 minutes after an unassigned drive segment. The end of on-duty segments is marked by whichever of these scenarios happens first
- The vehicle is turned off
- A driver logs into the ELD
How to manage on-duty unassigned segments on the Drivers App
Upon selecting a vehicle, drivers will be prompted to view all unassigned segment on the driver app. Each segment will now include both the unassigned driving time and the corresponding unassigned on-duty segment (if the vehicle idling time > 5 mins)
Clicking on the specific segment will show the breakdown of the driving segment vs. the on duty segment. Drivers must claim or unclaim the entire segment. Admins / drivers can edit logs afterwards if they need to make changes.
