With Samsara dual-facing cameras (models CM22 and CM32), Samsara provides the ability to monitor both what is happening in front of the vehicle and inside the cab.
Access to view or retrieve camera footage is restricted by the following roles and permissions: Full Admin or Read-only Admin roles or custom roles with Dash Cam Access permissions.
In addition, users with a custom role with Live Streaming permissions can initiate a live stream that includes inward-facing video and in-cab audio.
At your discretion, footage can be downloaded and shared with police or insurance companies as evidence.
If you use dual-facing cameras, inward-facing footage of the driver and cab is uploaded and saved to the Samsara dashboard in the following scenarios:
-
Safety Inbox events: The camera uploads and saves video footage of incidents of unsafe driving.
-
Harsh events: Harsh events are cases of harsh braking, harsh acceleration, harsh turns, and crashes. The camera records the 5 seconds before and after the harsh event happens and automatically starts uploading to the cloud after the event occurs.
-
AI events: Artificial intelligence based safety events are cases of unsafe Following Distance, Forward Collision Detection [Beta], Distracted Driving, or Policy Violations (beta). The camera records the 5 seconds before and after a Following Distance or Forward Collision Warning event, 2.5 seconds before and after a Distracted Driving event, or 0.5 seconds before and after a Policy Violation event and automatically starts uploading to the cloud after the event occurs.

-
Video requests: Users with Video Retrieval permissions can manually request video be uploaded and saved to the Samsara Cloud. The video can be up to one minute in length and can include both the inward and outward-facing footage. The Dash Cam Storage Capacity is different for specific dash cam models. You can further adjust camera settings to extend total storage capacity in exchange for a decrease in video quality.
-
Hyperlapse request: Users with Video Retrieval permissions can manually request video be uploaded and saved to the Samsara Cloud. The cloud will upload the hyperlapse video that includes both the inward and outward-facing camera. The Dash Cam Storage Capacity is different for specific dash cam models. You can adjust the settings to further extend total storage capacity in exchange for a decrease in video quality.
-
Live Streaming: Users with explicit live streaming permissions can initiate live streams of inward-facing video, outward-facing video, and in-cab audio. Drivers will receive an in-cab alert when a live stream starts and ends. Samsara only uploads and saves footage to the cloud if you specifically request a snippet from the Video Retrieval page.
