Tools Needed: Voltage tester or a multimeter
Install a vehicle gateway with an ACC-BPC cable:
-
Turn the vehicle key to the On position. Using the multimeter, verify that the wire or fuse box slot that you’d like to use has a Positive electrical charge.
Examples: Ignition Line, Fuse Box Slot, or any 12V positive wire.
-
Turn the key to the Off position and confirm that the wire/fuse box slot is also Off and not drawing an electrical current.
The device hibernates while the vehicle is off and will not drain the battery.
-
Wire the red wire (positive) on the ACC-BPC to that power source. (Optional) Use a fuse tap to assist in the fuse box install.
-
Connect the black wire (negative) on the ACC-BPC cable somewhere on the body of the vehicle as the ground.
To properly connect Samsara's Heavy Duty J1708 with USB cable, ensure that the USB portion of the cable is plugged in (see image below):
Note
(VG34 only) If you are also using a Samsara Dash Cam or an ID Reader, you will need to install a Install a Samsara USB Hub. Please contact Support if you did not receive one.
The heavy duty J1708 with USB cable is available with either 6 pins or 9 pins. Depending on the manufacturer year, the diagnostics port was a 6 pin J1708 protocol connector (year 1990-2000), a 9 pin J1939 protocol connector (year 2000-present), or hybrid 9 pin J1708 protocol connector (year 2000-present).
Beginning in the model year 2018, heavy-duty vehicles manufactured in North America, such as Kenworth, Peterbilt, Freightliner, Volvo, and Mack, began including an optional dedicated diagnostics port for telematics devices, known as the RP1226 port. This 14-pin standardized connector prevents interference from other telematics devices and allows for aftermarket and third-party access to heavy duty vehicle data.
When utilizing the RP1226 port, observe the following considerations:
-
Vehicle warranty: The RP1226 is the preferred port over the J1939 interface. If the RP1226 port is available and not used for the telematics connection, it may void the vehicle warranty. Samsara recommends that you read and understand the terms of your vehicle warranty coverage before selecting an alternative connection method.
-
RP1226 availability: Use cable CBL-VG-B1226/CBL-VG-C1226 to connect your VG with the RP1226 port, if available. To verify the connection availability, review the vehicle specification details or physically inspect the vehicle for the RP1226 port.
