Visibility into Site Gateway storage and retention key metrics help you to fulfill regulatory and company retention requirements while making informed decisions around camera configurations that may impact actual storage.
From Devices > Site Gateways, click on any gateway and view the Cameras tab.
For each gateway, you can view the video storage and retention metrics:
Field |
Description |
---|---|
Projected Retention |
(In Beta) Days of video projected to be saved. |
Total Camera Bitrate |
(In Beta) Average total data saved per second from all connected cameras. |
Storage per Day |
(In Beta) Average amount of data saved per day. |
Storage Used |
(In Beta) Total storage currently used on the gateway. |
Note
Days of storage retention and storage per day are calculated based on a 7 day average of each camera’s bitrate, which is a measure of how much data is saved per second. Bitrate is directly related to video quality settings, such as resolution, frame rate, and compression settings like quality and max bitrate. You can adjust these settings for higher quality video and fewer days of retention, or lower quality video and more days of retention.
-
For Samsara cameras, navigate to video settings for each camera to modify these settings.
-
For third party cameras, consult the manufacturer’s manual for instructions on how to modify these settings directly on the camera’s configuration web interface.
After updating video quality settings, it can take up to 7 days for storage, retention projections, and metrics to calibrate as bitrate will vary from day to night and from weekday to weekend based on the amount of activity present in the video stream.
