The Safety Overview (Safety ( ) > Overview) displays key fleet safety data and provides insight into high-level safety and coaching trends. You can also navigate reports using your fleet tags and identify the granular safety insights and risk factors that impact your safety scores.
The Safety Overview displays data driver behavior insights, performance by organizational tags, and risk factor trends. By default, the overview displays data over the last 30 days, but you can view events of a maximum duration up to one year. Use the Safety Overview to view the safety data of your fleet as a whole or export safety data to a CSV or XLSX file format.
To narrow the scope of the results, view the Score Distribution by Driver or Vehicle or use specific vehicle or driver tags using the Tags filter to the left of the Safety Overview. The tag navigation displays drivers and vehicles with tags. To view safety data report for specific groups, assign tags to drivers and vehicles. For example, if you have a distribution hub that is managed by a team, create a tag for that hub and assign the distribution hub drivers to the newly created tag. To view a comparison of multiple tags within the Safety Overview, see Tag Comparison.
To help you visualize and assess your fleet safety status, the Safety Overview is divided into the following categories:
-
Safety Actions: Highlights unresolved behaviors that require coaching including past due events, new events to review, events with unassigned drivers, and upcoming sessions.
-
Fleet Safety Score: Displays changes to safety score over time and highlights the main contributing behaviors to the safety rating of your fleet.
-
Risk Factors: Provides detail for safety events and behaviors that affect the safety score.
-
Driver Performance: Displays safety score metrics by drivers with selected tags and highlights driver safety scores of both the top and bottom performers.
-
Driver Coaching: Provides a summary of coaching behaviors including Coaching Timeliness Report, Coaching Effectiveness Report, and Event Resolution Report.
The Safety Score trend graph displays the current aggregate safety score and the change in fleet safety scores during the last 30 days (default). You can view safety score data for a maximum duration up to one year..
You can further modify the scope of the results using any of the following methods:
-
Driver or vehicle view: View the Distribution of Safety Scores by Driver or Vehicle
-
Assigned tags view: Tag Comparison
-
Point in time view: Hover over the graph line to view safety score information for a specific point in time
-
Change the date range: Use the date selector to modify the date range
Samsara calculates the aggregate safety score for each driver or vehicle, including any drivers or vehicles with the assigned tags that you select. For more information on how the safety score is calculated, see Safety Score Categories and Calculation.
The Safety Score Behavior Insights highlights the key contributing trends that influence the driver safety metrics for your fleet. These factors include the behavior type that has experienced the greatest change in the selected period as compared to the prior selected period, the behavior that has the biggest impact on the score, and (for tags) the percentage comparison against other tags. These insights exclude dismissed events; however, after you dismiss an event, the contributor calculation can take up to six hours to reflect the change. Select a Behavior Insight to view the Risk Factor report for that behavior.
To help you monitor the safety score for your fleet, you can set a safety score goal. After you enable the safety score goal, the safety score trend graph, tag score trends, and individual driver score trends display the safety score goal line to help you visually compare your current score to your target.
To enable and configure the safety score goal:
-
Select the Settings icon ( ) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
From within the Fleet settings, select Safety > Safety Score.
-
Enable the Safety Score Target setting.
-
Enter a Target Score value between 1-100.
-
Save to confirm the setting.
Risk Factor reports provide greater detail into the events and behaviors that affect the safety score. The Risk Factor summary displays the following information for each Risk Factor:
Field |
Description |
---|---|
Risk Factor |
Risk factor category. You can also expand the risk factor to view the metrics by specific behaviors. |
Count |
Total number of events (or time in the case of speeding events) that took place for all behaviors in that time period. This number includes events identified using Beta AI Event Detection. When you expand the Risk Factor, events detected using AI beta detection are indicated with a Beta label next to the behavior type. |
Rate or % |
Calculates the frequency of the behavior occurrence and indicates how the behavior is scored. For instance, if the behavior is scored per 1000 miles, then rate is the number of events per 1000 miles. If the behavior is scored as number of trips with a behavior, then the rate calculates per trip. If the top level rate indicates Mixed Rates, the Risk Factor has behaviors scored using both methods. |
Score Impact |
Number of points that were removed from the safety score due to a given risk factor. NoteEvents detected using AI beta detection are excluded from the safety score calculation. |
Expand a Risk Factor to view the breakdown for each behavior.
To view the individual report for a Risk Factor, click View Details. For more information, see Safety Risk Factor Reports.
To view the distribution of safety scores across your fleet, you can view a histogram of the safety scores.
To view the safety score histogram by driver or vehicle:
-
Select either Drivers or Vehicles from the left of the Safety Overview.
-
Above the Safety Overview, select either Driver Performance or Vehicle Performance based on the selection in the prior step.
-
To narrow the scope of the results, use the slider bar beneath the graph to change the range to only display vehicles or drivers with safety scores in the range.
-
Use the date selector to modify the range of dates for the histogram.
-
To view data for only the vehicles or drivers with a specific safety score, select the score bar.
For a comparative analysis of the safety metrics, you can select multiple tags. Select up to ten tags to view in the report.
Note
If the tag has nested tags within it, the top and bottom performing tag groups display. Otherwise, the top and bottom performing drivers or vehicles display.
The safety summary updates to include drivers and vehicles with the selected tags including the following Safety Overview sections:
-
Safety Score: The safety graph and safety metrics update for each selected tag. A light blue dotted line indicates the average score for the entire fleet.
-
Risk Factors: The table lists all selected tags for a single risk factor at a time. Toggle the risk factor menu to navigate between risk factors.
Expand ( ) each tag to view the event counts, rate, and score for each behavior in that risk factor. Select View Report to view the individual risk factor report for the behavior category.
-
Driver Performance: The table displays performance metrics to reflect only drivers assigned with the selected tags. The By driver table displays the ranking of drivers with the assigned tags.
From the Safety Overview, you can Schedule a Report (Safety Overview > more actions ( ... )) or export the following reports into a CSV or XLSX file format (Safety Overview > Export):
Report Type |
Description |
---|---|
Driver Report |
Safety Overview data by driver. |
Vehicle Report |
Safety Overview data by vehicle. |
Coaching Timeliness Report |
Displays which coaches are performing coaching activities on time and provides visibility into trends for past coaching behavior. |
Event Resolution Report |
Monitor coaching progress for coaching event. Displays individual and group coaching event statuses as they move through the coaching pipelines. |
Coaching Effectiveness Report |
Provides visibility into how effective coaches are at reducing repeat driver behaviors. |
Samsara recommends that you inform your drivers that certain data collected about their driving will be used to calculate a Safety Score and recommends that you provide drivers with materials about the Safety Score configuration and calculation specific to your organization. Safety Scores should be used primarily for coaching and training purposes and to help build a safety culture within your organization. Employment decisions including, but not limited to, those involving hiring, termination, compensation, and route and hours assignments should never be based on Safety Scores alone and should always only be one data point for an employment decision that is ultimately made by a supervisor or other employee.
