Manage Driver HOS Log Corrections

The following actions are required to complete an edit:

• A driver certifies their daily log

• The carrier makes corrections to the driver's log

• The driver must accept the suggested corrections to complete the edit.

Note

• You cannot suggest corrections to a log that has not yet been certified by the driver. See ELD Mandate on Driver Approvals for detailed terminology.

• Drivers cannot edit certified logs unless you enable Drivers Can Edit Certified Log in Customizable HOS Settings.

• Administrators can suggest edits to up to 6 months of certified logs (the driver is prompted to accept or reject these edits).

After you have confirmed the actions above are complete, you can perform the following edits on a driver log:

• Edit a Driver HOS Log (Admins)

• Ignore a Driving Segment

• Manage Misattributed Unassigned Segments

ELD Mandate on Driver Approvals

The ELD mandate requires driver approval of edits suggested by a carrier. Specifically, 49 CFR 395.30 (d) 1-2 states:

• "A driver must confirm or reject any proposed change [...] in order for any motor carrier-proposed changes to take effect."

• "A motor carrier may not request edits to the driver's electronic records before the records have been submitted by the driver."

To comply with this regulation, Samsara allows carriers to suggest edits to a driver's log only after it has been certified.

Edit a Driver HOS Log (Admins)

At the end of a shift, drivers certify their log from HoS > Log in the Samsara Driver App and can also Edit HOS Logs.

ELD regulations prohibit carriers from editing automatically recorded drive time. If you need to make any corrections, you can add a remark or edit as allowed by regulation from the Samsara dashboard:

1. From the Samsara dashboard, select Compliance ( ) > Driver HOS.

2. Select the name of the driver.

   To narrow the results, use the Search or apply Tags.

3. Select the date range of interest.

4. Select the date of the log you want to edit.

   Note

   Per ELD mandate requirements, admins can only edit logs after they have been certified by a driver. The ability to edit logs will be unavailable (grayed out) to admins until the driver certifies the logs.

5. (Optional) To navigate directly to a status change in the log, click on the segment from the log chart or highlight multiple segments to edit.

   

6. Click Edit to the right of any individual segment.

   For automatically recorded drive time, click Remark to add a comment.

   

7. Select a Start time and End time for the segment you want to edit. Use the left and right arrows to quickly jump to the next time segment.

8. (Optional) Select the Status you want to apply to this time segment.

   If you are only editing the vehicle assignment, you can leave the status as Unchanged.

9. Select the Vehicle assigned to the driver during this time segment. If the current vehicle assignment is correct, select Unchanged. To remove a vehicle assignment, select None.

10. Enter a brief explanatory Remark about the edit.

11. Select Ignore Driving Segment to recalculate the driver's clock status to Off Duty, On Duty, Personal Conveyance, or Sleeper Berth.

12. Save your edits.

    After Samsara saves the correction, you can toggle between Show Pending Edits and Hide Pending Edits option to compare the original log to the corrected log. The Samsara dashboard highlights pending edits in yellow and hides the Odometer value until the driver reviews and accepts the changes. The Samsara Driver App displays a red banner to Review Carrier Edits on the main HOS screen as well as on any individual log where pending edits exist.

13. The driver reviews the edits in the Samsara Driver App and either accepts or rejects the edits. To view the driver workflow for carrier edit suggestions in the Samsara Driver App, see Driver App Approval of Carrier Edits.

Ignore a Driving Segment

If you need to update a Driving (ELD) status change due to user error, such as when a driver forgets to sign out of the ELD and a mechanic moves the vehicle, you can annotate the driver log with Ignore Driving Segment to correct HOS clocks, duration calculations, and violations.

To edit a driver log with Ignore Driving Segment:

• You must be a full admin or have a custom role with Driver Logs - Ignore Essentials permissions.

• Drivers must be on Driver App version 2130.100 and above in order to see clocks and for violations to accurately reflect the new status.

Note

• Ignore Driving Segment annotation displays in the Datafile and does not remove the Driving (ELD) time from the Datafile, emailed logs, or officer-facing screens.

• All dashboard reports and API endpoints will reflect the new duty status.

1. To ignore a driving segment, first perform the workflow to Edit a Driver HOS Log (Admins). Return to this workflow when the procedure instructs.

2. Enable Ignore Driving Segment and click Next.

   

3. Select the correct Driving (ELD) Status.

4. Return to Edit a Driver HOS Log (Admins) workflow to complete the edit.

5. When the driver accepts the edit, the dashboard displays the correction with an annotation:

   

Effect on Driver Behavior

After you enable Ignore Driving Segment, and the driver accepts the edits, the Samsara Driver App annotates the shift and reflects the changes. The Samsara Driver App provides the following driver experience to review the carrier edits:

• From the Daily Log, the driver taps Review Carrier Edits.

  

• The driver reviews the edit and the admin remark. If the driver accepts the edit, the HOS clocks reflect the new duty status.

  

• During a Roadside Inspection, the edit displays as a remark in the driver log.
