Unpowered Asset Gateways, such as the AG45, AG46, and AG51, are wallet-sized trackers ideal for monitoring assets like intermodal containers, construction equipment, dumpsters, light towers, and other mobile assets. The AG features customizable GPS check-ins, a replaceable lithium battery that lasts between 1-5 years depending on the model, and a waterproof and ruggedized enclosure. The AG enables increased asset utilization, theft recovery, and optimized pool inventory management.

To install an unpowered Asset Gateway (AG), follow the detailed workflow below or review the AG45/AG46 Install Guide (PDF).
Before you begin activation and installation, ensure that the device is within a geographical area with cellular coverage.
Perform the setup and installation instructions for your unpowered AG model:
To install an AG45 or AG46 Unpowered AG you will need:
-
Activate the device in your dashboard if you have not already done so.
-
Remove the protective sticker from the side of the AG.
-
Use the provided pin to press and hold the button until the light turns green (1-5 seconds) and then release the pin.
The LED stays green for 5 seconds to indicate the device is active.
-
Confirm the device is active in the Samsara dashboard (Overview > Assets > Unpowered).
It can take up to 30 minutes for the device to complete registration in the dashboard.
-
Use the provided alcohol wipe to clean the install surface.
-
Mount the AG on the asset using one of the following methods:
With screws:
-
Position the AG on the mounting location.
-
Mark the location for the screws.
-
Remove the AG and drill small pilot holes in the screw locations.
-
Attach the gateway to the asset using the provided screws and tighten screws with the anti-theft bit key.
Without screws:
-
Place the provided VHB adhesive tape on the back of the AG.
-
Press the AG firmly into place.
-
-
(Optional) Camouflage the AG, as needed.
If you use spray paint, choose a non-metallic paint that will not interfere with antenna performance.
-
(Optional) Configure the check-in schedule for the AG.
By default, the AG check-in frequency is every 12 hours.
Using the default check-in settings and assuming normal cellular connectivity and normal environmental conditions, the batteries will operate for 1-3 years (AG46) or up to 5 years (AG45).
To install an AG51 Unpowered AG, perform the following workflow:
-
Activate the device in your dashboard if you have not already done so.
-
To initiate a test ping, press and hold the button on the AG faceplate until the LED illuminates green, for no more than 2-3 seconds.
The LED flashes green every 3 seconds for up to 5 minutes while the device attempts to check in with the Samsara dashboard. After the device determines status, the LED displays a color LED for 5 seconds to indicate the connection status. To surface the most recent check-in information to the Samsara dashboard, double-press the setup button.
-
Perform the action that corresponds to the observed solid LED behavior:
Status: Unsuccessful connection: Cellular connection fail, GPS fail
-
Ensure that the device is outside and avoid obstructions such as underground structures, heavily insulated buildings, bridges, and trees.
-
Ensure that the device has a clear view of the sky and is within cellular range.
-
Press and hold the button for 1-2 seconds and perform the action that corresponds to the observed LED behavior.
Status: Partial connection: Cellular connection OK, GPS fail
